Winchester Round Table - Events & Meetings

Regular Meetings

Winchester Round Table (Table No. 63) meets twice a month, on the first and third Tuesday of each month, with our ‘home’ venue for formal meetings being The Royal Hotel in Winchester.

Table meetings are governed by our own ‘Standing Orders’ which incorporate National Rules and the dress code is normally lounge suits or jacket and tie. At the start of each formal meeting we say the Round Table ‘Grace’ before anyone is seated, and the ‘Aims and Objects’ of Round Table are recited at some time during the meeting.

Some meetings are designated as Business meetings. These are to cover matters of Table Business.

Special Meetings

Each Table year is started and ended at the AGM that is in April. This is a black-tie meeting where the next year’s officers and other posts are elected.

Also each year there is a Marchesi Night black-tie dinner in March to celebrate the birth of Round Table.

Social

During the year many events both sporting and social are organised. The content varies from year to year.  Recent events have ranged from microlight flying to ice skating!

One event that is standard is Ladies Night. This is traditionally a night when Round Table say thank you to their wives / partners for their support throughout the year.  There are not many occasions during the year when a “3 line whip” applies, but all members are expected to attend Ladies Night.

Bonfire

Winchester Round Table has been organising the Community Bonfire in Winchester for over 40 years.

Many other Round Tables organise fundraising events throughout the year and although Winchester Round Table sometimes does organise other events too, our main fundraiser is the bonfire and fireworks display.  We have raised over £20,000 for local charities and worthy causes in each of the last few years.

Like Ladies Night, all Tablers are expected to get involved in the organisation of Bonfire and the programme selling running up to it.  In practice, this means three nights per week selling programmes in the 3 week period before Bonfire (those who cannot get home in time sell at the weekend instead) and a full day’s involvement building the bonfire on the Saturday and a half day clearing up on the Sunday.

All profits raised are handed to our Community Services committee who help distribute these funds to charitable causes throughout the Winchester area.

Area Council Meetings & AGM

In more recent years Winchester has built up strong links with Area 1, having many members elected onto the Area Executive and several of our members elected as Area Chairman.

Area Council meetings are held each quarter with the AGM in April. These meetings may be attended by all Table members, with each Table having 1 vote.

 National AGM

The National AGM is in April and is part of a long weekend known as National Conference. It is held in conjunction with the Ladies Circle AGM so members of Round Table and Ladies Circle as well as their partners attend the weekend. This is a great weekend of partying with the final night party being fancy dress with an attendance of some 3,000 people.

International

Twinning

Winchester Round Table has strong links with the Twin Towns of Winchester City which are Laon, France and Giessen, GermanyEach year Winchester has a twinning weekends with Laon. One year Loan RT will visit Winchester and then the following year we will go to Laon.

The Laon twinning takes place on the 3rd weekend in June and also involves former Tablers (members of 41 Club).  The idea behind the Laon twinning is that it is a relaxed family weekend. In order to make the weekend self-financing there is a cost of around £ 75 per family when you go to Laon.

Laon weekends are open to Round Tablers and their partners and children are welcome to attend.

For all twinning weekends you are 'hosted' in Tablers + former Tablers homes.

Euro 63

‘Euro 63’ was started in Holland in 1986. Each year one of the number 63 Tables in Europe hosts a long weekend (typically Thursday p.m. to Sunday Brunch) of terrific fun and fellowship for the other number 63 Tablers and their partners (children are not invited !).

There are currently 9 European Tables who are number 63 in their respective countries

Other

There are many other International events that you can join in with. These can range from the annual WOCO AGM meeting that is held in a different country each year to tours organised by the Round Table in India. Added to this are the National AGM's of each country plus many other activities. The web site is the best place to keep in touch with what is going on at an International level.

Don't forget also if you are abroad through work or on holiday the local Round Table would be pleased if you attended a Table meeting or some event. Don't forget to take a banner to exchange!
